discover your true motivations

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a multi-faceted tool that provides a comprehensive shortcut to self-awareness. While many personality tests focus on behavior, the Enneagram zeroes in on motivation and individual perspective based on a specific type.  Most motivations exist beyond our everyday level of understanding.  The Enneagram shines a light on hidden beliefs and subconscious strategies that hinder our ability to flourish personally and professionally.

The Enneagram

The Enneagram personality assessment is unlike other personality test because it goes beyond surface-level analysis and reveals deep-seated subconscious motivations. These subconscious motivations can derail your best intentions to make positive changes in life. This multi-faceted tool measures the level that underlying beliefs inform and drive the way you think, feel, and act in the world.

The word Enneagram is derived from the Greek Ennea, meaning ‘nine’, and Gram which means ‘written’ or ‘drawn’. A diagram of the Enneagram shows nine personality types as points on a geometric figure. Each of these types have corresponding numbers and descriptive names. Although this psycho-social tool has ancient roots, it’s been enhanced and expanded by psychologists, researchers, spiritual directors and organizational development specialists. Businesses worldwide use it to improve communication, innovation and team development.

The Nine Personality Types

Metaphors employed to describe the Enneagram include:

  • Nine different lenses or ways of seeing the world. The Enneagram identifies the specific “lens” of each type and also indicates the limitations to their particular view.
  • A survival strategy that each type devises subconsciously very early in life to connect, belong, or succeed in the world. This strategy has been called a personality, persona or false self. It’s the type of person one feels forced to become in order to get needs met. This strategy includes core motivations, fears and defense mechanisms that often sabotage true growth and sustainable change.
  • A self-imposed box we put ourselves in. It’s often thought that personality assessments like the Enneagram lead to unfair labeling but the opposite is true. This tool reveals the boxes we force ourselves into by subconsciously buying into false beliefs and mindsets that keep us trapped in dysfunctional patterns.

Retired Education Administrator, Masters of education

“I was delighted with the Enneagram assessment that Gina used! It reinforced insights I had begun to understand about myself. The beauty of the process was the reflective debrief time with Gina. She was able to walk me through the report in a way that helped me see how the dynamics and inner dialogue of my type impacted my daily living. Reflective questions and subsequent discussion helped me see the positive changes I could employ to thrive in my life. Gina is positive and professional. She has an excellent handle on the Enneagram as a tool for self-awareness and growth.”

What is the ‘Integrative’ Enneagram?

There are many different approaches used in Enneagram application. My training and the test I utilize employ an integrative model. This means that the whole person is taken into consideration throughout the process. This approach views a client’s professional, personal and relational life as deeply interconnected. The Integrative Enneagram combines your core type with various Enneagram-related psychological constructs to provide understanding beyond your type alone.
